Betway Extends Premiership Sponsorship Through 2028

The betting operator's renewed deal with the Premier Soccer League runs through the 2027/28 season, making it the longest continuous title sponsorship in the league's recent history.

Betway has confirmed a multi-year extension of its title sponsorship of the South African Premier Soccer League, keeping the "Betway Premiership" branding in place through the end of the 2027/28 season. The deal, announced at a press event in Johannesburg on 18 March, represents one of the largest sports sponsorship agreements in SA football and guarantees the league a stable naming partner for at least two more full seasons.

The PSL had gone through a turbulent stretch of sponsorship gaps before Betway stepped in. After Absa ended its long-running deal in 2020, the league operated without a title sponsor for over a year before DStv took the role temporarily. Betway's arrival brought stability and, crucially, cash flow that the league's 16 clubs depend on for broadcast revenue sharing and prize money. The renewal suggests both sides see real value in the arrangement.

For Betway, the sponsorship is about visibility in South Africa's most-watched domestic sport. PSL matches draw millions of viewers on SuperSport and SABC, and the Betway name appears on every pitch-side board, broadcast graphic, and match-day programme. That kind of exposure is hard to replicate through digital advertising alone. It also gives Betway an edge in a market where Hollywoodbets and Easybet are competing aggressively for the same customer base.

The deal draws obvious comparisons to the English Premier League, where betting companies have sponsored multiple clubs and even held shirt-front positions for years. In the UK, that level of betting visibility has come under political pressure, with voluntary restrictions now in place. South Africa hasn't reached that point, but the NGB's 2026 responsible gambling guidelines do require operators to include problem-gambling messaging in all broadcast sponsorship materials. Betway's PSL deal already complies with those rules.

From a punter's perspective, the sponsorship doesn't change the odds or the product. But it does reinforce that Betway is a serious, licensed operator with a long-term stake in the SA market. For a country where unlicensed offshore sites remain a problem, that kind of commitment from a provincially licensed bookmaker is worth noting.
