How odds formats work
Decimal odds
Decimal odds are the standard at South African bookmakers and across most of Europe. The number represents your total return for every R1 staked, including your original stake. Odds of 2.50 mean a R100 bet returns R250 (R150 profit plus your R100 back). The higher the number, the less likely the outcome according to the bookmaker. Anything below 2.00 is odds-on, meaning the bookmaker considers it more likely than not to happen.
Fractional odds
Fractional odds are traditional in the UK and still appear on some horse racing markets in South Africa. They show profit relative to stake. Odds of 3/2 mean you win R3 for every R2 you risk. To convert fractional to decimal, divide the first number by the second and add 1. So 3/2 becomes (3 / 2) + 1 = 2.50 in decimal. Fractions like 1/4 or 2/7 are short-priced favourites, while 10/1 or 20/1 are longshots.
American odds
American odds use plus and minus signs. A positive number like +150 shows how much profit you'd make on a R100 stake. A negative number like -200 shows how much you need to stake to win R100 in profit. Most South African punters won't encounter American odds unless they're reading US-based sports coverage or using an international exchange. Do odds affect my winnings differently in each format?

Why do odds change before an event?
