How We Review Betting Sites
Our full methodology: how we test, score and update South African bookmaker reviews. Transparent, independent and applied consistently across all 14 operators.
Our review principles
Tips reviews South African betting sites to three principles: independence, accuracy and usefulness. We do not allow operators to influence their scores. We verify facts before publishing. We write for South African bettors, not for search engines.
Who does the reviewing?
Our editorial team has four members:
Every review is written by one team member and fact-checked by a second. The site editor (Thabo Mokoena) approves final scores.
The seven scoring categories
We verify the provincial licence number with the issuing board. We check the licence holder entity, the registered address, and whether the FICA and KYC process is compliant. We assess the visibility of responsible gambling tools and the clarity of complaint routes.
We conduct real deposit and withdrawal tests using our own funded test accounts. We measure time to deposit confirmation, time to withdrawal processing, and the friction involved in completing KYC verification. We assess which local payment methods are supported.
We calculate the real value of the welcome bonus after applying the wagering requirement, minimum odds and any deposit threshold. A large nominal bonus with high wagering and restrictive odds rates worse than a modest bonus with low wagering and realistic odds.
We count the number of sports and leagues covered, assess market depth (number of markets per match), and check coverage of key South African sports: PSL football, Super Rugby, SA20 cricket, Betway Premiership and horse racing from SA tracks.
We test the Android app (or APK) and iOS app on physical devices. We assess load times, bet slip reliability, deposit and withdrawal flows, and registration completion. Mobile website quality is also scored for operators without a dedicated app.
We assess the breadth of in-play markets during a live match, the speed at which odds update, whether live cash out is functional, and whether live streaming is available. We test during actual live events, not simulated conditions.
We contact each bookmaker's support via all available channels (live chat, email, WhatsApp, phone) and measure response times. We assess how well the support team resolves a test query.
Update frequency
Hub comparison pages (best betting sites, bonuses, payments) are reviewed monthly. Individual operator reviews are updated as soon as we detect changes to bonus terms, payment options, licensing details or withdrawal performance. The date of last review is displayed at the top of every review page.
Commercial disclosure
This site earns commission from some bookmaker links. Commission arrangements do not influence numerical scores or rankings. Paid featured placement is labelled 'Sponsored'. Our editorial policy sets out the full separation between commercial and editorial functions.
