Prize claiming thresholds
How you claim your prize depends entirely on the amount won:
| Prize Amount | Where to Claim | Documents Needed | Payment Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to R2,000 | Any licensed National Lottery retailer | Original ticket | Cash over counter |
| R2,001 - R49,999 | National Lottery regional office or registered post | Ticket + valid ID + bank details | EFT to SA bank account |
| R50,000 and above | National Lottery regional office (in person) | Ticket + SA ID + proof of address + banking details | EFT to SA bank account |
Claiming a small prize (up to R2,000)
- Take your original winning ticket to any licensed National Lottery retailer.
- Ask the retailer to check and validate the ticket on the lottery terminal.
- If the prize is confirmed, the retailer pays you in cash over the counter.
- The retailer stamps or marks your ticket as claimed.
For prizes of R15 (Division 8 fixed prize), retailers can pay these directly without terminal validation, but it is always good practice to validate.
Claiming a medium prize (R2,001 - R49,999)
- Sign the back of your ticket immediately. Do not let anyone else sign it.
- Prepare: original ticket, valid SA identity document, proof of address (dated within 3 months), and your bank account details.
- Either visit the nearest National Lottery regional office in person, or post your ticket and documents by registered mail to Ithuba National Lottery.
- Allow up to 10 business days for processing after submission.
- Payment is made via EFT directly into your South African bank account.
Claiming a large prize (R50,000 and above)
- Sign the back of your ticket immediately and store it securely (e.g., in a safe).
- Contact Ithuba National Lottery on their official contact channels before visiting a regional office, as appointments may be required for large claims.
- Bring: original winning ticket, valid South African identity document (green ID or smart card), proof of residential address, and banking details for a South African bank account.
- For prizes above R100,000, additional financial source-of-funds verification may be requested from your bank.
- Once verified, Ithuba will EFT the full prize amount to your nominated bank account.
- No income tax or capital gains tax will be deducted from your prize.

Safety tips for lottery winners
- Sign your ticket immediately after purchasing or winning. An unsigned ticket can be claimed by anyone who finds it.
- Keep physical tickets safe. Store in a sealed envelope in a secure location. Do not leave them in a wallet or purse where they can be lost or damaged.
- Online wins are safer. Tickets purchased through the official Ithuba app or website are registered to your account and cannot be lost or stolen.
- Do not publicise your win immediately. Take time to secure your ticket and consult a financial adviser before announcing large wins.
- Use only official Ithuba channels. Never respond to emails, calls or messages claiming you have won a prize you did not enter. These are scams.
- Claim within 365 days. Set a reminder as soon as you identify a winning ticket.
Tax on lottery winnings
National Lottery prizes in South Africa are entirely tax-free. The Income Tax Act specifically exempts lottery winnings from income tax and capital gains tax. SARS does not require you to declare a lottery prize as income. However, any interest earned after depositing your winnings into a bank account is subject to normal income tax rules. Speak to a certified financial planner if you win a large sum.

No. National Lottery prizes are exempt from income tax and capital gains tax in South Africa under the Income Tax Act. The full prize amount is paid to the winner. However, any interest earned on winnings after banking them may be subject to tax.

For prizes above R2,000, the claim must generally be made by the registered ticket holder in person. A legal representative acting under a power of attorney may claim on behalf of a deceased estate, but this requires additional documentation. Ithuba advises against transferring tickets to a third party.
For online purchases through the official Ithuba platform, your ticket is registered to your account and a replacement can be issued. For physical retail tickets, a lost ticket cannot be replaced - the physical ticket is the proof of purchase. Sign the back of your ticket immediately after purchase.
