Understanding Value Bets

What is a Value Bet?

A value bet exists when a bookmaker's odds imply a lower chance of winning than the true probability. For example, if a bookmaker prices Arsenal at 2.10 but the actual probability of winning is 55%, that bet carries a positive expected value (EV). The EV% shown on each card is the estimated long-run profit per rand wagered. A +5% EV bet should return R5 profit for every R100 wagered, over a large enough sample of bets.

How to Use These Picks

Sort by the EV badge to prioritise the highest-edge selections. Green badges (5%+) indicate the strongest value; amber badges (2-5%) are moderate edges. Click through to Betway or TicTacBets to place your bet quickly, since odds can move fast once sharp money follows. Value betting works over volume, so track your results and stick to consistent bet sizing. Never chase losses by increasing bets in a session.

Frequently Asked Questions

A value bet is a selection where the bookmaker's offered odds imply a lower probability of winning than your model calculates. If a bookmaker prices a team at 2.00 (50% implied probability) but the actual probability of winning is 55%, that bet carries positive expected value. Over a large number of similar bets, positive EV selections should generate long-run profit.
EV% (expected value percentage) is the estimated long-run profit per unit wagered, expressed as a percentage. A bet showing +5% EV means that for every R100 wagered on that selection repeatedly, you should expect to earn R5 in profit on average. Higher EV percentages indicate a larger edge over the bookmaker's margin.
Our value bets come from two sources: Betway South Africa and TicTacBets. Both hold licences from a South African provincial gambling board. Betway is available at betway.co.za and TicTacBets is available at tictacbets.co.za. We display whichever bookmaker has the better line for each selection.
Value bets are refreshed automatically every 2 minutes. Odds move quickly in the lead-up to kickoff, so a bet showing positive EV now may no longer be available at those odds shortly after. The "Last Updated" timestamp in the stats bar shows when the data was last fetched. You can also tap the Refresh button to force an immediate update.
No bet is guaranteed to win. Value betting is a long-term strategy. Individual bets will lose, but a disciplined approach to positive EV selections should produce profit over hundreds of bets. Never bet more than you can afford to lose. If gambling is affecting your finances or relationships, call the SA Responsible Gambling Foundation helpline on 0800 006 008 (free, 24/7).
