Editorial Policy
How Tips maintains editorial independence, manages commercial relationships and ensures accuracy.
Independence statement
Editorial scores on Tips are not influenced by commercial relationships. No operator can alter its score, ranking position, or the content of its review by paying for placement, increasing commission rates, or any other commercial arrangement. The editorial team sets all scores independently based on the review methodology published at how we review betting sites.
When a numerical score changes, the reason is documented internally and must be one of: a material change to the operator's product verified by re-testing, a correction to a factual error in the original review, or a scheduled full re-review. Score changes driven by commercial activity are prohibited.
Commercial relationships and labelling
Tips earns revenue through affiliate commission arrangements with some bookmakers listed on the site. When a reader follows a link to an operator and registers, we may receive a fee. This is the primary source of revenue that funds this publication.
The following safeguards are in place:
- Affiliate commission is not a factor in any numerical score or ranking position.
- Paid featured placement, where an operator pays to appear in a highlighted or prominent position, is disclosed with a visible Sponsored label on that placement.
- All operator reviews are editorial content produced by the Tips team, not paid advertorials. Reviews are never produced, edited, or reviewed by operators before publication.
- The editorial team does not discuss commercial terms with operators. Commercial relationships are managed separately.
- Operators may submit factual corrections to their own pages through the contact process described on the complaints and corrections page. They may not request score changes.
Source hierarchy
Every legal, licensing, and payment claim published on this site must be sourced from a primary source before publication. Primary sources take precedence over all secondary sources.
- Tier 1 (primary): National Gambling Board portal (ngb.org.za), provincial gambling board registers, and the operator's own verified terms and conditions pages.
- Tier 2 (secondary): Government Gazette notices, parliamentary committee records, and operator press releases.
- Tier 3 (reference only): News reports, industry publications, and third-party commentary. Reference-only sources are not sufficient to support factual claims about licensing, legal status, or payment terms.
Where a primary source is unavailable, the claim is either omitted or clearly marked as unverified pending confirmation.
Evidence standards
Every claim in a review about a bookmaker's bonus terms, payment methods, licensing details, or payout performance must be verified by the reviewing author from a primary source before publication. The author records the source URL or document reference at the time of review. A second team member completes a fact-check before the review is published, checking each primary-source claim against the cited source.
Claims that cannot be verified from primary sources are not published.
Corrections process
Factual errors are corrected within 48 hours of verification, whether identified internally, reported by a reader, or notified by an operator. The correction process works as follows:
- A reported error is logged and assigned to a team member for verification against the relevant primary source.
- If the error is confirmed, the page is updated and a correction notice is added at the top of the updated section noting the date and nature of the change.
- Corrections are logged in the archived corrections record on the complaints and corrections page.
- The 48-hour target applies to editorial corrections. Significant factual errors affecting legal or licensing claims are prioritised and corrected within 24 hours where possible.
To report an error, use the process described on the complaints and corrections page or email help@tips.co.za.
Update cadence
The editorial team runs a weekly audit cycle covering pages that carry time-sensitive data: licensing registers, bonus terms, payment method availability, and responsible gambling tool access. Pages flagged in the weekly audit are updated before the following audit cycle. The most recent audit date is recorded in the page's last-reviewed timestamp.
Regulation pages and the legal hub are reviewed within 48 hours of any material NGB or provincial board announcement.
Responsible gambling content standards
This site does not use promotional language in responsible gambling content. Pages covering problem gambling, self-exclusion, deposit limits, and the SA Responsible Gambling Foundation helpline are written to inform and signpost support, not to retain users or minimise the risks of gambling. No bonus offers, affiliate links, or operator recommendations appear within responsible gambling content sections.
All pages accessible to site visitors include a responsible gambling notice with the SA Responsible Gambling Foundation helpline number: 0800 006 008 (free, 24/7). This site does not promote offshore casino operators or unlicensed gambling services.
