How PowerBall works
PowerBall is run by ITHUBA, the National Lottery operator in South Africa. To enter, you pick 5 main numbers from 1 to 50 and 1 PowerBall number from 1 to 20. Draws happen every Tuesday and Friday at 21:00 SAST. Ticket sales close at 20:30 on draw days.
A single board costs R5. You can play up to 10 boards on one ticket, and you can choose your own numbers or opt for a QuickPick, which generates a random selection for you. The draw uses two separate drums: one for the 5 main balls and one for the PowerBall. Matching more numbers across the 9 prize divisions wins you a bigger prize, with Division 1 requiring all 5 main numbers plus the PowerBall.
If no one wins the Division 1 jackpot, the prize rolls over to the next draw. There's no cap on rollovers, which is why the jackpot can grow to very large amounts before it's won. The minimum guaranteed jackpot is R10 million. Rollovers are common, so it's worth checking the current jackpot size before you play. Approximate overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 36.
PowerBall prize divisions explained
There are 9 prize divisions in every PowerBall draw. The more numbers you match, the higher the division and the bigger your prize. Divisions 1 through 7 are pari-mutuel, meaning the prize pool for each division is split among all winners in that division for that draw. Divisions 8 and 9 pay a fixed amount regardless of how many players match.
| Division | Numbers matched | Typical prize range | Odds (1 in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Jackpot) | 5 main + PowerBall | R10m minimum (rolls over) | 42,375,200 |
| 2 | 5 main numbers | R500,000 to R1,500,000 | 2,230,274 |
| 3 | 4 main + PowerBall | R20,000 to R60,000 | 188,924 |
| 4 | 4 main numbers | R1,000 to R2,000 | 9,943 |
| 5 | 3 main + PowerBall | R500 to R1,000 | 4,280 |
| 6 | 3 main numbers | R50 to R100 | 225 |
| 7 | 2 main + PowerBall | R25 to R50 | 183 |
| 8 | 1 main + PowerBall | R15 (fixed) | 51 |
| 9 | PowerBall only | R10 (fixed) | 36 |
Prize ranges are approximate and vary by draw depending on ticket sales and the number of winners in each division. Always verify actual payouts on the official National Lottery website.
PowerBall Plus
PowerBall Plus is an optional add-on game available when you buy a PowerBall ticket. It costs R2.50 extra per board, on top of the R5 base price, so both games together cost R7.50 per board.
PowerBall Plus uses the same 5 main numbers and PowerBall number you selected for your main entry. It's drawn in the same session but uses a separate prize pool, so the Division 1 jackpot is independent of the main PowerBall jackpot. You can win on PowerBall, PowerBall Plus, or both in the same draw.
The prize structure for PowerBall Plus mirrors the main game, with 9 divisions and the same matching requirements. The jackpot starts at R2 million and grows with rollovers. If you're already buying a PowerBall ticket, adding PowerBall Plus gives you a second chance at a jackpot for a small additional cost.
