Mamelodi Sundowns start their title defence away at Chippa United on the opening weekend. Orlando Pirates host TS Galaxy at Orlando Stadium in the marquee opening fixture. Kaizer Chiefs travel to Polokwane City for their first match of the campaign. The season kicks off the weekend of 8 August and runs through May 2027, with the MTN 8 quarter-finals slotted into the last weekend of August.
The setup
Sundowns won the 2025/26 title by nine points, their eighth league crown in the last eleven seasons under the Patrice Motsepe ownership era. Pirates finished second and reached the CAF Champions League group stage. Chiefs finished fourth, their best league placing in four years, and enter this season under a settled coaching structure for the first time since 2021. Stellenbosch FC finished fifth, six points off the top four, on the back of a squad built around loan signings and a compact defensive shape.
The fixture computer paired Sundowns with three of last season's bottom-half sides across their first five matches, a schedule generally regarded as favourable. Pirates face a tougher opening five, including trips to Chiefs and Sekhukhune United inside the first month. Chiefs open away at Polokwane City, at home to Stellenbosch, then away at Sundowns in matchweek four, arguably the toughest opening month of any club in the top half of the table.
The July transfer window has been active. Sundowns brought in two Zambian internationals and retained their entire back four from last season. Pirates lost their first-choice goalkeeper to a European move and have not yet replaced him at time of writing. Chiefs added a Ghanaian winger on a two-year deal and released four players from last season's senior squad.
Sekhukhune United and SuperSport United round out the group of sides chasing a top-4 finish. SuperSport United changed head coach in June after a poor run of results last season, and new appointments in South African football typically need six to eight matches to settle into a consistent system. That transition window overlaps with the toughest part of their opening schedule, which includes home matches against Sundowns and Pirates inside the first six weeks.
The broadcast schedule for the opening weekend confirms all nine fixtures will be shown live on SuperSport, with the Pirates versus TS Galaxy opener as the Saturday night feature match. Kickoff times were also released alongside the fixture list, with most weekend matches split across a 15:00 and 18:00 SAST slot to avoid direct broadcast clashes.
What the odds say
Outright title odds opened with Sundowns at 1.55 across the panel. Betway has Sundowns at 1.55, Hollywoodbets at 1.53, and 10bet at 1.57. Pirates sit at 5.00 with Betway and 4.80 with Hollywoodbets. Implied probability on the outright market sums to roughly 108% across the main four contenders at Betway once the field is included, a normal overround for a pre-season market this far from kickoff. That overround typically compresses by three to four points once the opening month of results is in, which argues for early positioning over waiting.
Value spots
The value is not in the outright at these prices. It is in the top-4 finish line, where Stellenbosch is trading at 3.25 with Betway despite a lighter travel schedule than three of the four teams it needs to overtake. The desk is leaning toward Stellenbosch top 4 as the headline value play of the pre-season window, sized as a one-unit position rather than a staking-plan maximum given the distance to kickoff.
Our fixture-difficulty model weights each opponent by last season's expected-goals difference, then adjusts for home and away splits and rest days between matches. On that basis Stellenbosch's opening ten fixtures rank as the third-easiest run in the division, behind only Sundowns and Richards Bay. Sekhukhune's opening ten fixtures rank seventh-easiest, a meaningfully tougher run despite trading at a similar top-4 price across the panel.
Sundowns' opening match at Chippa United is a second angle. Betway is offering Sundowns over 5.5 total match corners at 1.72, which looks short given Chippa's compact defensive block and Sundowns' wide-play numbers from the second half of last season. The desk view is that 1.72 undervalues a corners count that averaged 7.1 for Sundowns in away matches against bottom-half sides last term.
Chiefs' cards market at Polokwane is the third spot. Chiefs to receive over 2.5 cards is priced at 2.10 across the panel. Polokwane's disciplinary record at home last season, combined with Chiefs' younger midfield pairing, points to a cards count that has consistently cleared 2.5 in comparable away fixtures. This is a smaller stake idea given the longer odds and the single-match sample size.
The counter-argument
Pre-season fixture-difficulty models are built on last season's squads, and both Pirates and Chiefs have made changes that could shift form quickly in either direction. Pirates' unresolved goalkeeper situation is a real risk to their points total in the opening two months, and if a like-for-like replacement is not signed before matchweek one, their defensive numbers could slip well below last season's baseline. Stellenbosch's top-4 case also depends on avoiding injuries to a thin squad with limited depth at centre-back, a position where they carry only three fit senior options at time of writing.
There is also a broader risk with backing any top-4 outsider this early. South African winter transfer windows close in early September, three weeks into the season, and a late incoming signing at Sekhukhune or SuperSport could shift the balance of the race before the fixture-difficulty numbers have had time to reflect it. Bettors taking the Stellenbosch top-4 position should treat it as a pre-season view subject to revision, not a fixed conviction call that ignores in-season transfer activity.
Punting angles
Corners markets across the opening weekend carry more residual value than the outright markets, because bookmakers price corners primarily off last season's team-level averages rather than adjusting for July transfer activity. Chiefs' cards market at Polokwane is the second angle worth tracking, given the younger midfield pairing likely to start and Polokwane's home disciplinary record. Both markets should sharpen once two or three matchweeks of data are in.
First-half goals is a third angle worth a small stake across the opening weekend. Pirates and Chiefs both scored a disproportionate share of their league goals in the second half last season, which means the first-half under markets at several bookmakers have not yet adjusted for either side's slower starts. Betway prices Pirates under 0.5 first-half goals at 1.95 against TS Galaxy, a fixture where Pirates have historically taken time to settle at home.
